Change is in the Air, According to Our Survey Results

By Julie Simpson, Senior Consultant
Thanks to all who participated in our “Appetite for Change” survey last month. Overall, the results were not surprising to our team, as we have noted more of a willingness by our clients to make changes. Maybe it is a sign of the times, but the days of decade long relationships seems fewer and farther between. In light of this, let’s take a look at some of the results.

Why Hasn’t Gamification Taken Off?

By Katharine Williams, Director of Marketing and Communications
A few years ago, gamification was the big buzzword in managed travel. There was hardly an industry conference to be found that didn’t feature several sessions on the topic. Recently, however, our team has noticed that what used to be considered the next big game changer in the managed travel space has gone a little… quiet. So where does gamification stand today, what should travel managers consider when exploring whether gamification is right for their program, and where is it headed in the future? Let’s explore.

Basic Economy Fares: Branding Genius

By Neil Hammond, Partner
Many years ago, airlines implemented a multi-tiered fare structure that effectively distinguished between business travelers and leisure travelers. Business travelers were likely to pay higher fares as they were more committed to the need for travel, and at the same time, the airlines were able to vacuum up the discretionary dollars of the leisure traveler.

Amex GBT Acquisition of KDS Impact

By Julie Simpson, Senior Consultant
The announcement in late August that American Express GBT had reached an agreement to purchase KDS caught many by surprise, although there was no secret about their desire to have their own online booking tool. The Amex/Microsoft partnership to co-develop a tool was one of the earliest efforts and there was the later partnership with Rearden. It looks like the third time will be the charm.

Unboxing the GBTA Air RFP Template

In Denver at the 2016 GBTA Convention, the airline panel unveiled a new template for corporate airline requests for proposals (RFPs). You may be forgiven for thinking that this is long overdue, as the GBTA hotel RFP template has successfully become the industry standard for many years. It should be understood, however, that the dynamics of air RFPs and those for hotel are vastly different.

There’s no denying the impact that the sharing economy has had on business travel, from how we get from Point A to B, to where we stay when on the road. Have We Reached the End of U.S. Airline Consolidation?

So is it true, have we really seen the end of U.S. airline mergers?

Dispelling Travel Management Myths: The Happy and Compliant Traveler

By Will Tate, Partner
Three myths and a truth – a unicorn, Bigfoot, a civil presidential campaign, and happy/compliant travelers… Although satisfied and compliant travelers may seem to fit in well with the others, this elusive ideal can be achieved. Balancing the two great pressures in travel management is no easy feat – they can pull in different directions, have different stakeholders, and are driven by different emotions. Traveler satisfaction and travel policy compliance may seem like they are on opposite ends of the travel continuum, but our recent survey results indicate it’s possible for travel managers to find common ground through communication and persuasion.

Risk Management vs. Cost Savings: Where Should My Company Be?

By Mark Williams, Partner
One of the primary, if not paramount, responsibilities of the travel manager is to mitigate traveler risk. All of us would agree to spend whatever it takes to protect a traveler in any specific situation. Specific situations do not arise often, however, and when they do they usually cannot be anticipated and are unique in their demands and requirements for resolution. The travel manager is thus challenged to implement a risk management program – technology, communications, procedures – that covers a broad range of potential risks.

It’s All In Your Travel Policy…Or Is It?

By Julie Simpson, Senior Consultant

Understanding the World of Virtual Payments

By Colleen Black, Partner
Virtual payment remains a hot topic among corporate travel buyers. The results of our survey show that while only 22% of the responding companies currently use virtual cards, 40% are planning to deploy in the coming year. This is consistent with a BTN article from June 2014 that reports “double digit growth” and high momentum in virtual card usage. It appears, according to our survey, that usage is widening in the corporate space.

Beyond the Discounts – A deeper look into airline relationships

By Neil Hammond, Partner
Many corporate travel programs have seen the value of their airline discounts diminish over the years. Throw a Bigger Party – Expand your bid list and your options

By Neil Hammond, Partner
If you were hiring to fill a new position on your team, I wonder how many resumes you would review. I expect your initial net would be cast to include more than a handful of potential candidates.
